Vitamin C functions in the formation and maintenance of collagen, a protein that forms the basis for the body's connective tissue. Collagen acts as a cementing substance between cells and is found in bones, eyes, teeth, tendons, skin, blood vessels, joints and muscles. In this role vitamin C helps heal wounds, burns, bruises and broken bones. It is also a powerful antioxidant and immune system booster and recent research indicates it may help combat some forms of cancer and heart disease, but its reputation for curing the common cold is still unproven. Because it is water soluble, excess vitamin C is excreted in the urine so large amounts can usually be taken without fear of toxicity. |
