Sheridan of New York, 1831-1888, Union One of the most successful Union generals and one of the most respected military men of the 19th century; led cavalry in the weatern campaigns in Kentucky and Tennessee. In April 1864, through bold tactics and aggressive leadership, was made Commander of all cavalry for the Army of the Potomac at age 33 by Ulysses S. Grant. Through a series of brilliant victories from Winchester, 1864 to Appomattox, 1865, Sheridan, on his famous horse ''Rienzi,'' helped orchestrate the final surrender of Lee at Appomattox.
