The Imation Black Watch Extended 3590 Tape Cartridge features double the tape length of current 3590 media, native capacity of 40GB per cartridge (120GB compressed) when used with an IBM 3590E drive. The new cartridge enables the drive's native data transfer rate of 14 MB/sec, the fastest among half-inch tape formats. The Imation Black Watch Extended 3590 Tape Cartridge also is compatible with the IBM 3590 B-models, providing native capacity of 20GB per cartridge (60 GB compressed) supporting a native data transfer rate of 9 MB/sec. All current B-model and E-model drives require a hardware upgrade and a microcode change to work with the new cartridge. All drives shipped after March 3rd will be Extended-cartridge compatible. The new cartridge will not load in a non-upgraded drive so there is no risk of damage to hardware or cartridges if an Extended cartridge is loaded in a drive that is not Extended cartridge compatible.
